World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (ಮಾನವ ಕಳ್ಳ ಸಾಗಾಣಿಕೆ ವಿರೋಧಿ ದಿನ)

World Human Trafficking Day program was jointly organized by the Advocates' Association, Sringeri, the NSS Sri JCBM College Sringeri, and IQAC. The event took place at JCBM College, Sringeri, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 10:30 AM, to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (ಮಾನವ ಕಳ್ಳ ಸಾಗಾಣಿಕೆ ವಿರೋಧಿ ದಿನ). The seminar successfully educated students and staff on the modern traps of human trafficking and the rising threat of online financial fraud.

Keynote Sessions and Technical Talks

1. Address by Shri K. R. Suresh: Modern Tactics in Human Trafficking

Shri K. R Suresh, delivered an insightful address focusing on the evolution of human trafficking in the digital age and during the programme, Sri K. R. Suresh explained the transition from the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into force on 1 July, 2024. He highlighted the major changes introduced under the new criminal law and specifically explained Section 143 of the BNS, which deals with trafficking of persons and prescribes stringent punishment for the offence.

  • Digital Grooming: Traffickers increasingly use social media platforms, gaming apps, and fake dating profiles to build trust with vulnerable individuals, particularly young students.
  • Fraudulent Job Offers: False employment advertisements promising lucrative work-from-home jobs or overseas opportunities are actively used as traps.
  • Exploitation Mechanisms: Once trapped, victims face immediate passport confiscation, debt bondage, physical coercion, or blackmail through compromised personal data.
  • Precautionary Measures: He urged students to thoroughly verify the credentials of placement agencies and maintain strict privacy settings on social media.

2. Address by Shri Jithu R. S.: Online Phishing and Cybercrime Awareness

The Honorable Civil Judge, Shri Jithu R. S., inaugurated the event and educated the audience on the legal and preventative aspects of cyber threats, focusing on phishing and digital safety.

The Anatomy of Phishing: Fraudsters mimic legitimate banks, government portals, or courier services via SMS, emails, and WhatsApp to steal sensitive data.

Current Threat Vectors: He highlighted current tactics such as deceptive lottery wins, electricity bill expiry alerts, and high-pressure threats of immediate bank account suspension.

Defense and Prevention:

Ø Never click on unverified hyperlinks or download unknown attachments.

Ø Legitimate institutions or banks will never request One-Time Passwords, UPI PINs, or net banking passwords over the phone.

Ø Enable multi-factor authentication across all email and banking accounts.

Legal Redressal: In case of financial fraud, individuals must immediately dial the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or log a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in within the golden hour to freeze illicit transactions

Doctor,Dhanwanthari hospital,sringeri   addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of balanced food habits and mindful consumption in maintaining good health.
