Traditional Paddy Varieties in the Malnad Region

 The Department of Economics, Sri J.C.B.M. College, Sringeri, organized a one-day workshop on “Traditional Paddy Varieties in the Malnad Region” on 16th September 2025 in the college’s Main Hall. The event aimed to create awareness among students about the preservation and promotion of indigenous paddy varieties and their significance in sustainable agriculture.

The program commenced at 11:30 AM with a warm welcome address by Kum. Adhiti, III B.A., who greeted the dignitaries, faculty members, and students.

In his introductory remarks, Prof. Vidyadhar M. V., Head of the Department of Economics, emphasized the importance of conserving traditional paddy varieties and discussed their relevance to rural development and environmental sustainability.

The session was presided over by Prof. Yogesh Kumar, In-Charge Principal, who encouraged students to participate in such academic initiatives to gain a deeper understanding of socio-economic and ecological issues related to agriculture.

The Resource Person, Sri Nagesh Rao, a progressive farmer from Agali, shared his rich field experience and practical insights into traditional paddy cultivation practices in the Malnad region. He elaborated on the challenges and opportunities in sustaining indigenous varieties amidst changing agricultural trends and climate conditions.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Sri Jeevan, III B.A., who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries, staff, students, and organizers for their contribution to the success of the event. The session was effectively compered by Kum. Chandana, III B.A.

The workshop proved to be highly informative and inspiring, enriching participants’ knowledge of economic, environmental, and policy aspects of traditional agriculture. It reaffirmed the need to revive and protect India’s rich agrarian heritage for future generations.
